Celebration
I take advantage of any chance I get to celebrate a great cause or great people, especially if there is an opportunity to bring together diverse communities. I love uplifting and highlighting those who are often left in the margins.
Growing up I was always taught to celebrate other people’s cultures, holidays and heritage. I still believe we should do this; however, the only issue was that I never saw myself in any of those examples of culture. For many years I simply believed that I did not have a culture; that was not a contribution I, or anyone who looked like me, made to the world. Now that I have had the pleasure and privilege to travel abroad a few times I know that I was wrong. Whenever I travel abroad and participant in food demonstrations, museums, tours, cultural activities I am able to identify something in my own community that is similar in nature. Being Black in America comes with its own language, style, experiences, history and more. The only problem is that these are not always valued or seen as true culture. It has taken me a while to realize this but I glad to know that I, along with people like me, have made a meaningful contribution and impact on this world. This knowledge allows me to celebrate global and personal exploration simultaneously.
On a national level you can find me hosting personal and campus events meant to uplift, give back, and affirm those around me. Every February I host an intimate brunch for my girl friends, this afternoon event is designed to celebration the power of womanhood and the beauty of sisterhood over a delicious midday meal. I am fortunate to be able to add a philanthropic cause to my birthday. My annual Christmas in July event always brings a crowd and a good amount of donations for local charities.
Engagement in co-curricular opportunities is an invaluable part of the college experience. My goal is to provide a social outlet for students in order for them to cultivate personal and professional passions. It is rewarding to see students apply what they have learned from class into various events, programs, and projects.
